Despite the flaws listed above, Gray’s writing is for the most part alxsdair inventive, and his descriptions are among the best I’ve read, although they can get self-indulgent. But it didn’t quite come together for me.

Jun 15, Andreea rated it it was ok Shelves: They are fitting tributes to a life sustained by literature. I tripped over Lanark, literally, on the floor of a friend’s house and recall quite clearly being struck by the then cover as I picked it up.
In grah three, Lanark cannot remember his past, and so in the prologue at the end of book three Lanark asks an oracle to tell him who he is, with the oracle stating he will tell him about Duncan Thaw. It’s a shame, because Book 3 with which the novel opens is a brilliant start, and sadly the rest of the work never quite lives up to the exuberance and originality of those first few chapters. Can’t remember much about this big, crazy book but I do remember it was big, and crazy, and about Glasgow, and not-Glasgow, which was called Unthank. It was some other book by Alasdair Gray, Poor Things.
The woman and child left him, and for no very clear reason he had been sent on a mission to some sort of assembly I don’t normally think of novels in terms of literary movements, but it seems like this one really wanted its postmodern credentials.
I love that he is talented not just with writing but with art too, it’s such a fresh thing to experience. I have given this 2. A Life in Four Books. He remembered a stone-built city of dark tenements and ornate public buildings, a city with a square street plan and electric tramcars…but below a starless sky this city was coldly blazing.
There he enters a vast Orwellian compound known as The Institute This novel is a mix of dystopia with fantasy elements and bildungsroman. He just wrote, grew old, wrote some alasdzir, and grew older.
