Which made me realize how ignorant I truly was about history. The origins of the first Industrial Revolution; the spread of industrialism in Europe and beyond ; socialism and industrialism. Some of this is interesting, but not interesting enough to bother with the rest.

A History of Civilizations
The approach to the history announced by Braudel on my mind is the most productive and humanitarian one. So I was intrigued when I saw A history of Civilizations at a used book store. Fernand Braudel was a French historian and a leader of the Annales School. I’d say to read it as it explains Braudel’s approach, among other things, which is helpful in making sense of the big picture he is going for in the book.

A shame, as I’ve liked much of his other stuff. A History of Civilizations. The book literally put me to sleep.
I have been saving Braudel for years, brakdel the mistaken assumption that my French would improve enough to take him on in his original language. The Structures of Everyday Life: Latin America was described in much of the same terms.
Follow the Author
I found the chapters on Islamic civilization quite interesting. And colonialism, typically, is the submergence of one civilisation by another. I thought that he would speak about the origin and implications of the modern day English speaking hegemony over the rest of the World, but he only brushed over the United States and Australia – but it brauxel nothing to do with his chapter titles besides the fact that they are English speaking countries.
Histry then it dawned on me.
